Description

Classes cover a range of topics that help children to explore, become more connected and gain knowledge about the ecology of Vancouver and surrounding areas. There are many ecosystems to explore in our urban areas, from marshland, streams and ponds to forests and shoreline.

The children will use tools like microscopes, viewing scopes, ID books and other aids to help them learn and explore their environment. Classes feature games, songs, stories, props, specimens and cool experiments. Most of all, we have lots and lots of fun!

Some activities include:

  • Exploring artifacts relating to the subject plant or animal
  • Scientific method
  • Science experiments
  • Stewardship opportunities
  • Art and poetry
  • Pond dipping to find amazing aquatic creatures
  • Searching for unusual insects
  • Delving into the life and times of animals and plants found in the forest, along the shoreline and in the pond
  • Games related to the subject animal or plant
  • Have the opportunity to become an ornithologist, entomologist or an oceanographer for the day.

Locations

Location are on the west side of Vancouver. Exact meeting locations will be emailed to participants prior to the week’s class.

Locations are tide and weather dependent, this is why they are decided prior to each week’s class.

Health and safety

Exploration and fun is a part of childhood and has inherent risks. Here at Earth Heads we make reasonable decisions and take precautions to minimize risks. However children are permitted to explore, play and discover their world under supervision and direction.

Wind and storm warnings: If Environment Canada has issued a wind warning during an Earth Heads class, the class will be cancelled.

Rain is a wonderful part of West coast weather. Children should be dressed appropriately for wet circumstances. Classes are cancelled if there is a rain warning issued by Environment Canada.

Children who arrive to class under-dressed for the weather will be sent home.

Precautions to note:

  • The instructor always carries a mobile phone.
  • The instructor has child first aid/CPR training and always carries first aid kit.
  • The instructor is a trained child-care specialist with a criminal record check.
  • Earth Heads carries an insurance policy
  • The instructor carries emergency numbers and medical information for all children on every program.

The following are forms filled out for each participant:

  • Emergency Card
  • Medical Authorization (to perform CPR and first aid)
  • Release Form
